Notes on Hope Devotional

Pour Out Our Hearts

Psalm 62:8
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

In late August, I found myself in an undefined place, emotionally. I noticed I was numb. Nothing was particularly going on; Yes, I was tired. Life was in neutral; I wanted to gain a better understanding of what was going on. So, I journalled and started writing, and it turned into a prayer.  Today’s verse became a reality of “pouring my heart out to the Lord.”  Here’s what it looked like:

I come empty, fill me
I bring nothing, I need You
I am weak, strengthen me
I come weary, sustain me
I come uncertain, help me
I come wanting, satisfy me
I come needy, meet me
I come anxious, calm me

After writing and reading what I wrote, I noticed two things. Like wiping the mirror after a shower, I sensed a shift in my mood. I felt a clarity of seeing where I was. The second thing I noticed was how expressing my feelings to the Lord led me to ask Him to come into all of it. The reality of the verse was evident as I poured out my heart. “Trust in him at all times, you people, pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.”

Telling God how we feel, expressing our pain, frustration, disappointment, and sadness allows us to experience His safety, protection, and security. We can trust God because He is our safe place.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You that we can come with everything and pour out our hearts to You. Thank You for how You lovingly listen and recenter our scattered minds. Help us come daily. We need You.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
