Proverbs 6:22
(Bind them always on your heart;
fasten them around your neck.)
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.
Proverbs is filled with principles for living. Its major theme is wisdom. So much of the book is filled with guidelines and instructions that, when adhered to, bring satisfaction and good outcomes. Today’s verse does just that.
The author is encouraging the reader to bind and fasten God’s Word, like a belt or tunic. The results will be evident if followed.
“When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.”
Each phrase offers a time and result of holding tight to God’s promises.
Walking, we are guided;
Sleeping, we are watched over;
Awake, we are spoken to.
It’s a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week formula. There’s not a time we are not seen, heard, known, and loved.
In my struggle to sleep soundly, I have found this verse to be a reminder that God sees me not sleeping, as I toss and turn hoping to go back to sleep at 3 am. Somehow, I find a sense of care and being seen.
Being aware of the constant, ever-true promises of God’s Word surrounding me, whether I’m sleeping, eating, sitting, driving, walking, or in a doctor’s office or hospital room, I can experience peace.
Awareness leads to acceptance that God will guide, lead, guard, see, hear, know, comfort, and provide. God’s promises are guaranteed. 24-7.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your constant care for us. Help us bind Your promises and recall Your faithfulness throughout the day. In Jesus Name, Amen.
